General Description:
The Magenta Dottyback, scientifically known as Pictichromis porphyrea, belongs to the Pseudochromidae family, characterized by their vibrant colors, hardiness, and relatively small size, typically under 4 inches. This species, native to the Western Pacific region from the Philippines to Samoa, possesses a unique eye shape distinguishing it from other fish varieties like Hawkfish or Angelfish.

Aquarium Suitability:
Considered suitable with care, the Magenta Dottyback requires ample space, hiding spots (such as live rocks), and a well-structured feeding regimen to manage its aggressive behavior towards peaceful tankmates and potential jumps out of open aquaria. Furthermore, precautions are necessary when cohabitating with smaller crustaceans due to their predatory nature.

Care and Hardiness:
Known for its hardiness, this fish prefers water conditions with a pH ranging from 8.1 to 8.4, a specific gravity between 1.020 and 1.025, and a temperature of 22.2-25.6°C. Adequate hiding places and a varied, high-quality diet are crucial for maintaining their health and vibrant coloration, as they may become dull in captivity.

Reef Suitability:
The Magenta Dottyback is classified as reef safe with caution, requiring careful observation when introduced to reef environments due to their aggressive behavior and threat towards smaller crustaceans commonly found in coral reefs.

Aquarium Setup:
To provide a suitable environment, an aquarium of at least 70 liters is recommended, with ample hiding places like live rocks. Maintaining stable water parameters, offering a varied diet of small crustaceans and zooplankton, and ensuring tank security against potential jumps are essential for their well-being.

Behaviour:
Typified by an aggressive temperament towards other species, the Magenta Dottyback can exhibit territorial behavior when housed with docile tankmates. Regular feeding, spacious surroundings, and adequate hiding spots can mitigate their aggressiveness to some extent.

Feeding and Diet:
In captivity, these fish should be fed a varied diet comprising small crustaceans like krill and mysis shrimp, as well as zooplankton such as Cyclops and pods. A diverse and balanced diet is essential to support their nutritional needs and vibrant coloration.

Habitat and Distribution:
In the wild, the Magenta Dottyback inhabits the waters of the Western Pacific, ranging from the Ryukyu Islands in the north to the Moluccas and Admiralty Islands in the south. Their natural habitat includes coral reefs and rocky substrates where they can seek shelter and hunt for prey.

Dimorphism:
This species is hermaphroditic, with the ability to change gender from female to male as needed. Captive breeding is possible, making it advisable to inquire at local fish stores for specimens bred in captivity.
