General Description

The Feather Duster, scientifically known as Sabellastarte sp., is also referred to as the Giant Feather Duster. It showcases a stunning fan-shaped crown, or radiole, typically colored in shades of tan or orange with brown band patterns. Some variations of this species, especially those from specific regions, may exhibit larger radioles up to 7 inches in diameter, or display brighter hues. This marine invertebrate employs its radiole to filter tiny floating organisms from the water, guiding them towards its central mouth. To shield its segmented body, the Feather Duster secretes a paper-like tube, concealing itself within. When disturbed, it has the ability to swiftly retract its radiole into this protective tube. During severe stress, it can shed its crown, regenerating it later on.

Aquarium Suitability

The Feather Duster is deemed to be relatively easy to care for in aquariums, making it suitable for beginners in the marine invertebrate hobby. This species thrives in well-established reef systems, as it heavily relies on plankton for nourishment. However, it is essential to note that the Feather Duster is highly intolerant to copper-based medications, necessitating a cautious approach when treating any ailments in the aquarium.

Demands, Care, and Hardiness

Categorized as an omnivore, the Feather Duster necessitates a diet that includes phytoplankton and liquid organic foods, supplementing its filter-feeding behavior. This peaceful species prefers moderate water flow conditions in an aquarium environment with stable parameters. Maintaining water conditions with a carbonate hardness (KH) ranging from 8-12, a pH level of 8.1-8.4, and a salinity between 1.023-1.025 is crucial for its well-being. Regular supplementation of calcium and trace elements further supports its health and growth.

Reef Suitability

Being reef-compatible, the Feather Duster is a valuable addition to reef aquariums. It commonly seeks residence in coral rubble situated at the base of the reef structure, integrating some rubble into its tube. Its peaceful temperament makes it a harmonious inhabitant among other reef organisms.

Aquarium Setup

When setting up an aquarium for Feather Dusters, providing ample coral rubble and rock formations at the bottom of the tank mimics its natural habitat. Ensuring a matured reef system with stable water parameters and supplemental feeding options is vital for their longevity.
