General Description
The Spotted Parrotfish (Cetoscarus ocellatus) belongs to the Scaridae family, known for their effectiveness as algae eaters on the reef. These fish can grow up to 80.0cm in size and are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, from the East coast of Africa to the Society Islands and Micronesia.
Aquarium Suitability
Despite being effective algae eaters, the Spotted Parrotfish is not suitable for home aquariums due to its adult size requirements. When fully grown, this species demands a very large tank, typically exceeding 5000 liters, making it challenging to house in a domestic setup.
Care and Hardiness
With average hardiness levels, the Spotted Parrotfish requires a tank with excellent filtration due to its large appetite. These fish eat a substantial amount, primarily large polyp stone coral and small polyp stone coral, which should be considered when planning their care routine.
Reef Suitability
The Spotted Parrotfish is not reef safe, as it may feed on rock corals in addition to algae. Therefore, caution should be exercised when considering housing them in a reef aquarium setting.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for the Spotted Parrotfish, ample space for swimming should be provided, as these fish enjoy swimming. It is also beneficial to have plenty of algae in the tank for them to graze on. Water conditions should be maintained at a pH of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12.
Behaviour
The temperament of the Spotted Parrotfish is unknown, but they are known to create mucus cocoons to sleep between stones. Additionally, these fish can change gender, transitioning from female to male as needed within their social structure.
Feeding and Diet
This species predominantly feeds on macroalgae like seaweed and microalgae such as spirulina. They are known to consume significant amounts of algae, making them valuable for controlling algae growth in a suitable environment.
Habitat and Distribution
Found in regions ranging from the East Indian Ocean to the Central/West Pacific, the Spotted Parrotfish thrives in coral-rich habitats. Their distribution extends from the East coast of Africa to the Society Islands, Tuamotus, and islands of Micronesia, where they contribute to the ecosystem as efficient algae grazers.
