General Description
The Dusky Parrotfish (Scarus niger), also known as the Swarthy Parrotfish, is a member of the Scaridae family. They are indigenous to the Indo-Pacific region, stretching from the Red Sea to the southern Great Barrier Reef. These fish are herbivores and play a crucial role in reef ecosystems by consuming algae and sometimes feeding on rock corals.
Aquarium Suitability
While the Dusky Parrotfish is considered suitable for aquariums with care, it demands a large tank when fully grown. This species can reach up to 40.0cm in length and requires a minimum tank size of 2000 liters. Due to their heavy feeding habits, they need an aquarium that can handle the substantial bio-load they create.
Care and Hardiness
With average hardiness, the Dusky Parrotfish is known for its fun and interesting personality. They thrive when housed as a pair – one male and one female, or one male with multiple females. These fish are heavy algae-eaters, consuming varieties like green hair algae and filamentous algae. Providing ample space for swimming is crucial for their well-being.
Reef Suitability
The Dusky Parrotfish is not reef-safe due to their feeding habits, which may include nipping at corals. Therefore, they are best kept in fish-only aquariums or those with robust coral species.
Aquarium Setup
Setting up an aquarium for the Dusky Parrotfish involves ensuring a spacious environment with plenty of algae for grazing. Maintaining good filtration is essential due to their large appetite. Offering macroalgae like seaweed and microalgae such as spirulina is recommended for their diet.
Behaviour
These fish exhibit peaceful temperaments but require adequate swimming space. Additionally, Dusky Parrotfish have the unique ability to change gender from female to male as needed within their social dynamics.
Feeding and Diet
Dusky Parrotfish primarily feed on algae, making macroalgae and microalgae essential components of their diet. Their voracious appetite for algae dictates the need for a constant supply in the aquarium.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, Dusky Parrotfish are found in the East Indian Ocean, West Indian Ocean, Australia, Japan, the Red Sea, Indonesia, and various parts of the Pacific Ocean. Their distribution ranges from the Red Sea in the north to Sodwana Bay, South Africa in the south, and eastward to the Society Islands.
