General Description
The Miles Lionfish, also known as the Devil Fish or Devil Firefish, showcases color variations from red to burgundy, with white and brown to black vertical stripes alongside fan-like pectoral fins and tall banded spines on the dorsal fin. Native to the Indian Ocean, including regions like the Red Sea and South Africa, this species closely resembles the Volitans Lionfish, albeit with fewer spines on its dorsal and anal fins.
Aquarium Suitability
With a semi-aggressive temperament, Miles Lionfish are relatively easy to care for and can adapt well to aquarium settings. These fish can grow up to 15 inches, requiring a tank size of at least 120 gallons with ample hiding spots.
Care and Hardiness
Despite their venomous spines used for defense, Miles Lionfish infrequently pose threats to humans. When stung, immediate action with heat and medical attention is recommended due to the potency of their venom. They primarily feed on smaller fish, shrimp, and crustaceans.
Reef Suitability
Miles Lionfish are deemed reef-compatible with caution due to their predatory nature, which may threaten smaller tank mates in a reef environment.
Aquarium Setup
For an optimal aquarium setup, ensure water conditions with a pH range of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity level between 1.020-1.025, and a carbonate hardness level of 8-12 dKH. Include various hiding spots to mimic their natural habitat and encourage their acclimation to the tank.
Behaviour
Initially prone to hiding when introduced to a new aquarium, Miles Lionfish gradually become bolder and are commonly observed swimming in the open once acclimated. Their semi-aggressive nature necessitates caution when selecting tank mates.
Feeding and Diet
Feeding a carnivorous diet, these lionfish are initially enticed with live saltwater feeder shrimp before transitioning to a prepared diet of fresh, uncooked shrimp, frozen silversides, and squid pieces with patience and consistency.
Habitat and Distribution
Pterois miles, the Miles Lionfish, is predominantly found across the Indian Ocean, encompassing regions like the Red Sea, South Africa, and extending to Sumatra. Their natural habitats consist of rocky crevices and coral reefs where they can camouflage themselves for protection and ambush prey.
