General Description

The Mombasa Lionfish, scientifically known as Pterois mombasae, is a captivating member of the Lionfish family characterized by its beautiful brown coloration. Often mistaken for the Antennata or Spotfin Lionfish due to their similar appearance, the Mombasa Lionfish can be distinguished by its shorter pectoral fin filaments, larger eyes, unique barring pattern on the tail base, and the absence of dark spots on the pectoral fins. This species, originating from the Indian Ocean and commonly exported from East Africa, Maldives, and Sri Lanka, showcases striking pectoral fin filaments resembling wings.

Aquarium Suitability

With a temperament classified as semi-aggressive and a Carnivore diet, the Mombasa Lionfish presents moderate care demands and requires a tank with a minimum size of 50 gallons. Due to its venomous dorsal and anal fin spines, caution must be exercised during handling and tank maintenance to avoid potential stings resembling bee stings.

Care and Hardiness

The Mombasa Lionfish should be housed in a dimly lit tank with ample hiding spots provided by overhangs and structures, ideally aquascaped with live rock for shelter and open areas for swimming. This nocturnal hunter preys on smaller fish, shrimp, and crustaceans, so tank mates should be chosen carefully to avoid predation.

Reef Suitability

Considered reef-compatible with caution, the Mombasa Lionfish may pose a threat to smaller reef inhabitants. Therefore, careful consideration and monitoring are essential if kept in a reef tank setting.

Aquarium Setup

When setting up an aquarium for the Mombasa Lionfish, ensure the tank is at least 50 gallons in size, dimly lit, and equipped with hiding places like overhangs and structures. Aquascape the tank with live rock to offer shelter and create open spaces for swimming.

During the day, the Mombasa Lionfish is typically found perched on rockwork or under overhangs. Its predatory nature drives it to consume smaller fish, shrimp, and other crustaceans within the tank.

Feeding and Diet

For the Mombasa Lionfish, a carnivorous diet is essential, including live shrimp, live fish, and occasional crustacean flesh. Freshwater Ghost (Glass) Shrimp can be utilized to entice feeding initially, with a gradual transition to silversides and chunks of raw shrimp through training.
