General Description
The Sixblotch Hind, scientifically known as Cephalopholis sexmaculata, is a member of the Serranidae family, specifically the Cephalopholis genus. This species, also referred to as Six-spotted rockcod, Six-banded grouper, Sea bass, and by various other common names, is native to the Indo-Pacific region, ranging from the Red Sea to South Africa and eastward to French Polynesia. The Sixblotch Hind can grow up to 50.0cm in length and is characterized by its striking six-blotched pattern across its body.
Aquarium Suitability
Considered suitable for aquariums, the Sixblotch Hind demands a very large tank, with a minimum size of 1800 liters when fully grown. Due to their rapid growth rate, providing ample space is crucial for their well-being. These fish are known to devour various marine inhabitants like fish, shrimps, and crabs of appropriate sizes, emphasizing the need for caution when selecting tank mates.
Care and Hardiness
Regarded as hardy, Sixblotch Hinds are docile yet may display aggression towards similar species. It is essential to create an environment with plenty of hiding spots, such as spaces between live rocks, given their shy nature. These fish prefer dimmed lighting conditions and a varied diet consisting of fish, larger crustaceans, and small crustaceans like krill and artemia for optimal health.
Reef Suitability
Reef compatibility with Sixblotch Hinds is achievable with caution. Their tendency to consume smaller tank mates and the need for larger living space render them more suitable for fish-only setups rather than reef aquariums.
Aquarium Setup
Setting up an aquarium for Sixblotch Hinds involves providing ample hiding places, dimmed lighting, and a spacious tank setup to accommodate their growth. Additionally, a robust filtration system is necessary due to their hearty appetite and resulting waste production.
Behaviour
Sixblotch Hinds exhibit a docile temperament but can show aggression towards members of the same species or similar fish. They are known to thrive better when kept individually rather than in groups.
Feeding and Diet
These fish require a diverse diet comprising fish, larger crustaceans like shrimp and crabs, as well as smaller crustaceans such as krill and mysis. Regular feeding with a varied diet ensures their nutritional needs are met in captivity.
Habitat and Distribution
In their natural habitat, Sixblotch Hinds are found in the East Indian Ocean, West Indian Ocean, Australia, the Red Sea, Indonesia, and the Central/West Pacific regions. They prefer rocky areas and coral reefs where they can hide and hunt for prey in the wild.
