General Description
The Humpback grouper, scientifically known as Cromileptes altivelis, belongs to the Serranidae family and can be found in the Western Pacific from southern Japan to Australia and the Eastern Indian Ocean. This species is commonly known as the Humpback grouper, Flatfish grouper, Pantherfish, Panther grouper, Barramundi cod, or Baramundi cod.
Aquarium Suitability
The Humpback grouper is considered suitable for aquariums with caution due to its fast growth rate and the demand for a very large tank, a minimum of 2000 liters. This species has a peaceful temperament but can be a threat to smaller fish, shrimps, crabs, and other invertebrates.
Care and Hardiness
This species is hardy but requires good hiding places such as live rocks and can initially be shy when introduced to a new environment. They enjoy a varied diet consisting of fish, larger crustaceans, other invertebrates, and small crustaceans like krill and mysis.
Reef Suitability
The Humpback grouper is reef safe with caution, as it may prey on smaller reef inhabitants. It is recommended to introduce more aggressive fish only after this species has acclimatized.
Aquarium Setup
To accommodate the Humpback grouper, a very large tank with ample hiding spots and a robust filtration system is necessary. The water conditions should ideally have a temperature between 22.2-25.6°C, pH of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12.
Behaviour
Known for its fun and interesting personality, the Humpback grouper can coexist with others of its kind when provided with sufficient space in the aquarium.
Feeding and Diet
This species must be fed a varied diet to meet its nutritional needs. They thrive on a diet of fish, larger crustaceans, other invertebrates, and small crustaceans like krill and mysis.
Habitat and Distribution
The Humpback grouper inhabits regions ranging from southern Japan to Palau, Guam, New Caledonia, and southern Queensland in Australia. They can also be found in the Eastern Indian Ocean from the Nicobar Islands to Broome, Western Australia.
