General Description
The Blue-and-yellow Grouper, scientifically known as Epinephelus flavocaeruleus, is a member of the Serranidae family. This species starts with a youthful bright blue hue and yellow fins, which darken to black or purple as they mature.
Aquarium Suitability
Suitable for aquariums but demands a very spacious tank, with a minimum size of 2800 liters, due to their potential growth to 90.0cm. They are hermaphroditic, capable of changing from female to male as needed, and may exhibit aggression if not given sufficient space or when housed with similar fish species.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
The Blue-and-yellow Grouper is considered hardy; fast growth can be achieved with a well-rounded diet consisting of fish, large crustaceans, and other invertebrates. Their heavy feeding habits necessitate robust filtration systems to manage nutrient output.
Reef Suitability
Reef compatible with caution, as this species poses a threat to smaller fish, shrimps, and crabs within the reef environment due to their predatory nature.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for the Blue-and-yellow Grouper, it is essential to provide ample swimming space due to their enjoyment of swimming. Maintaining water parameters within a pH range of 8.1-8.4, a temperature between 22.2-25.6°C, a salinity level of 1.020-1.025, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12 is crucial for their well-being.
Behaviour
This species may exhibit aggression towards similar fish species and should be monitored accordingly in a mixed-species tank setup.
Feeding and Diet
Requiring a varied diet, the Blue-and-yellow Grouper feeds on fish, larger crustaceans like shrimp and crabs, and other suitable invertebrates to maintain optimal health.
Habitat and Distribution
Native to the East and West Indian Ocean, the Blue-and-yellow Grouper can be found in the regions stretching from the Gulf of Aden to South Africa and east to the northwest tip of Sumatra, Indonesia. They are also present in various islands in the western Indian Ocean, excluding the Red Sea and Persian Gulf.
