General Description
The Yellowback Anthias, scientifically known as Pseudanthias evansi, belongs to the Serranidae family. This colorful species can grow up to 12.0cm in size and is native to the East Indian Ocean, West Indian Ocean, Australia, Japan, Indonesia, and the Central/West Pacific regions. It is commonly referred to as the Yellowtail fairy basslet or Goldback anthias due to its distinct yellow back.
Aquarium Suitability
Due to their delicate nature, keeping Yellowback Anthias in an aquarium requires experience, preparation, and extra care. They are known to be docile but can exhibit aggression towards similar species. It is recommended that these fish be kept by experienced aquarists due to their specialized feeding requirements for continual survival. The species is also prone to jumping out of open aquaria, so appropriate precautions need to be taken.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
Yellowback Anthias are considered delicate and sensitive, especially during transportation and acclimatization to the aquarium. They thrive best in aquariums with hiding places such as live rocks. Regular feeding several times a day with a varied diet, including small crustaceans and zooplankton, is essential for their well-being. The species can be choosy initially but will adapt to eating fish flakes over time.
Reef Suitability
Yellowback Anthias are known to be reef compatible, making them suitable additions to reef aquariums. They are generally peaceful and do not pose a threat to coral or other reef inhabitants.
Aquarium Setup
To set up an aquarium suitable for Yellowback Anthias, a minimum tank size of 400 liters is recommended. The tank should provide ample hiding spots, such as live rocks, to mimic their natural habitat. Maintaining stable water conditions with a pH range of 8.1-8.4, a temperature between 22.2-25.6°C, and a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025 is crucial for their well-being.
Behaviour
Yellowback Anthias are known to be shy and docile, so caution should be exercised when housing them with more aggressive fish. They can exhibit aggression towards similar species, especially if kept in groups where hierarchy disputes may arise.
Feeding and Diet
These fish require a varied diet that includes small crustaceans like krill, mysis, and artemia, as well as zooplankton such as cyclops and pods. Feeding several times a day, especially during the initial stages of acclimatization, is necessary for their nutritional requirements.
Habitat and Distribution
In their natural habitat, Yellowback Anthias can be found in the waters of the Indian Ocean, ranging from East Africa to the Cocos-Keeling and Christmas Islands, and north to the Andaman Sea. They prefer areas with reef structures and hiding spots where they can seek shelter and security.
