General Description

The Square-spot fairy basslet, scientifically known as Pseudanthias pleurotaenia, is a member of the Serranidae family, displaying vibrant colors and reaching a maximum size of around 20.0cm. This species is commonly found in the Pacific Ocean, ranging from Indonesia to Samoa, with distribution extending north to the Ryukyu Islands and south to the Rowley Shoals in the eastern Indian Ocean and New Caledonia.

Aquarium Suitability

Considered suitable for specialized aquariums, the Square-spot fairy basslet requires a minimum tank size of 500 liters due to its delicate nature. Known to be docile and timid, special attention must be paid to its tank mates as it may exhibit aggression when space is inadequate. Acclimating best when introduced as juveniles, these fish prefer dimmed lighting and must have ample hiding spots, often among live rocks.

Demands, Care, and Hardiness

This species necessitates a varied diet, primarily consisting of small crustaceans like krill and artemia, along with zooplankton such as cyclops and pods. Owners should be aware of their frequent feeding requirements, especially during the initial introduction phase. Behaviour

Known for its shy and docile nature, this species may initially hide when introduced to a new environment. Therefore, it is recommended not to disturb them during this acclimatization period to reduce stress and aid in a smoother transition.

Feeding and Diet

The Square-spot fairy basslet thrives on a varied diet consisting of small crustaceans such as mysis and artemia, as well as zooplankton like Cyclops and pods. Regular feeding multiple times a day is necessary, especially during the initial stages, until they adapt to the aquarium's food sources.

Dimorphism and Captive Reproduction

This species exhibits hermaphroditic behavior, capable of changing gender from female to male as needed. When kept in groups, they may form a hierarchy with one male and multiple females. Large numbers of this species in the aquarium may require additional space to avoid potential aggression among individuals.

Habitat and Distribution

In their natural habitat, Square-spot fairy basslets can be found in the East Indian Ocean, Australia, Japan, Indonesia, the East Pacific, and Central/West Pacific regions. Preferring dimly lit areas and sheltered spaces among rocks, they typically inhabit reef environments rich in hiding spots.
