General Description
The Ignitus Anthias, scientifically known as Pseudanthias ignitus, hails from the Maldives and is affectionately referred to as the Flame Anthias due to its stunning coloration. This species exhibits a captivating blend of fiery reds, bold oranges, and vibrant yellows, making it a visually striking addition to both fish-only with live rock (FOWLR) setups and reef aquariums.
Aquarium Suitability
With its peaceful temperament, the Ignitus Anthias is well-suited for inclusion in community tanks. A minimum tank size of 264 litres or approximately 70 gallons is recommended for housing a single Ignitus Anthias; however, for optimal welfare in a small group setting, a 125-gallon tank with one male and several females is ideal.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
Categorized as an easy-to-care-for species, the Ignitus Anthias thrives when provided with stable water conditions. Keeping the aquarium parameters within a pH range of 8.1-8.4, a carbonate hardness (dKH) of 8-12, and a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025 is essential for the well-being of this vibrant fish.
Reef Suitability
Reef enthusiasts will appreciate the Ignitus Anthias for its compatibility with reef environments. As a reef inhabitant in its natural habitat, this species adapts well to the conditions typically found in reef aquarium setups.
Aquarium Setup
When establishing an aquarium for the Ignitus Anthias, ensure the presence of ample hiding spots and swimming space. Live rock formations, caves, and other structures serve both as shelters and areas for exploration, mimicking the species' natural habitat.
Behaviour
This species exhibits a peaceful temperament, making it an excellent choice for community tanks. During courting displays, the male Ignitus Anthias intensifies its vibrant coloration, with the bright red dorsal fin prominently displayed in an upright position.
Feeding and Diet
As a carnivorous species, the Ignitus Anthias thrives on a varied diet that includes frozen mysis shrimp, enriched frozen brine shrimp, and high-quality flake foods. Supplementing its diet with live food sources, such as copepods and amphipods from an attached refugium, helps ensure optimal nutrition.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, the Ignitus Anthias inhabits shallow waters, particularly in the Maldives region. Its striking coloration and active nature make it a captivating sight among the coral reefs where it is commonly found.
Dimorphism and Captive Reproduction
Anthias species are known for their hermaphroditic nature, with females having the ability to transition to males in certain circumstances. In captive settings, successful reproduction of the Ignitus Anthias has been achieved through meticulous attention to water quality and providing appropriate breeding conditions.
