General Description
The Sebae Anemone, scientifically known as Heteractis malu, is also referred to as the Leather Anemone or sometimes confused with Heteractis crispa. Typically displaying a light tan to brown body coloration with potential purple tips on its tentacles, this species belongs to the Stichodactylidae family.
Aquarium Suitability
Considered difficult to care for, the Sebae Anemone demands expertise from aquarists. Acclimating it to aquarium conditions can be a challenge, requiring strong lighting, porous live rock, and various sandy and rocky spots in the tank. It is recommended to introduce a Clownfish companion, like the Blue Striped Clown, to aid in acclimatization and enhance its survival chances.
Care and Hardiness
With a temperament classified as aggressive, this anemone thrives under high lighting conditions and moderate water flow. It is crucial to maintain water parameters within the ranges of pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity of 1.023-1.025, and carbonate hardness of 8-12 dKH. Supplementing their diet with iodine and trace elements is beneficial for their well-being.
Reef Suitability
Requiring cautious consideration in reef setups, the Sebae Anemone may interact with surrounding corals and other invertebrates due to its aggressive nature. Careful monitoring is recommended to prevent any territorial disputes within the reef environment.
Aquarium Setup
Creating a suitable environment for the Sebae Anemone involves providing ample space, strong lighting, and varied substrate options. Incorporating live rock structures and maintaining stable water conditions are essential for its overall health and vitality in the aquarium.
Behaviour
When healthy, this species can develop a strong adhesion, making it challenging to detach from surfaces without causing damage. Its behavior tends to be territorial, especially towards other anemones or tank mates, emphasizing the need for careful consideration when choosing companions.
Feeding and Diet
Feeding the Sebae Anemone a diverse diet consisting of fish, worms, clams, shrimp, and other meaty foods once a week is recommended for its nutritional requirements and overall well-being. Ensuring a balanced and varied diet contributes to its longevity in captivity.
Dimorphism and Captive Reproduction
Dimorphism or specific reproductive behaviors in captivity are not extensively documented for the Sebae Anemone. However, maintaining optimal tank conditions and providing suitable nutrition may enhance the likelihood of successful captive breeding attempts.
Habitat and Distribution
The natural habitat of Heteractis malu includes tropical waters, where it can be found in diverse marine environments. Its distribution spans certain regions, and replicating these conditions in captivity is vital for the species' long-term health and well-being.
