General Description

The True Carpet Anemone, also known as the Gigantic Sea Anemone or Giant Carpet Anemone, features a wavy appearance and can reach sizes of up to three feet in diameter. It inhabits shallow waters in regions like the Central Pacific, Indo Pacific, and Red Sea. This anemone possesses relatively short, tapered tentacles with a milder sting compared to its close relative, Stichodactyla haddoni.

Aquarium Suitability (Expert Only)

This species is extremely challenging to maintain in a home aquarium and is best suited for highly experienced aquarists due to its demanding care requirements and aggressive nature.

Demands, Care and Hardiness

The True Carpet Anemone needs a tank with strong lighting, robust water movement, and a minimum tank size of 189 litres. It prefers a mix of sandy and rocky areas to mimic its natural habitat and should be given time to settle into the tank after introduction. Careful monitoring is required as it can potentially harm corals, other anemones, and even fish with its potent sting.

Reef Suitability

It can be cautiously kept in a reef tank but requires close observation due to its aggressive behavior and potential harm to other tank inhabitants.

Aquarium Setup

To set up the aquarium for the True Carpet Anemone, provide strong lighting, ample water flow, and a varied terrain of sandy and rocky substrates. Ensure the anemone has a stable base to attach its foot and avoid placing it near other anemones or corals within a 12" diameter.

Behaviour

This anemone is sticky to the touch and can cause severe reactions in humans upon contact. It may move around the tank, so careful placement and monitoring are essential to prevent damage to other tank inhabitants.

Feeding and Diet

As a carnivorous species, the True Carpet Anemone should be fed a diet of fresh fish, uncooked shrimp, large mysis shrimp, and other meaty marine foods regularly, potentially even daily.

Habitat and Distribution

Found in rocky reefs with soft muddy or sandy substrates, the True Carpet Anemone can be located in the shallow waters of the Central Pacific, Indo Pacific, and the Red Sea. It prefers burying its foot in the sandy bottom near a rock for stability and protection.
