General Description:

The Red Tuxedo Urchin, scientifically known as Mespilia cf globulus, is a marine invertebrate belonging to the family Temnopleuridae. It has an oval or round body covered in hundreds of short, sharp spines that can puncture the skin. This species typically grows up to 7.6cm in size and boasts a distinctive black coloration.

Aquarium Suitability:

The Red Tuxedo Urchin is considered a peaceful and easy-to-care-for addition to an aquarium. It is herbivorous, scavenging for food and algae over rocks and substrate. Due to its sensitivity to high copper levels and nitrate concentrations, a well-maintained tank with a minimum capacity of 75 litres is recommended.

Demands and Care:

This species is a herbivore and will primarily feed on algae, necessitating sufficient algae growth in the tank. In cases of low algae levels, supplementation with dried seaweed is advised. The Red Tuxedo Urchin demands stable water conditions with a pH of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.023-1.025, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12.

Reef Suitability:

The Red Tuxedo Urchin is reef-compatible, adding both a functional and aesthetic element to a reef tank. Its herbivorous nature makes it a valuable member of the cleanup crew in reef environments.

Aquarium Setup:

Behaviour:

This species tends to hide during the day and emerges at night to graze on algae. While Red Tuxedo Urchins often roam alone, multiple individuals can coexist in a sufficiently large aquarium that can support their dietary and shelter needs.

As a herbivore, the Red Tuxedo Urchin primarily feeds on algae found in its environment. Special attention should be given to ensuring there is enough algae present in the tank to sustain its dietary requirements. Supplementing its diet with dried seaweed when algae levels are low is recommended.
