General Description
The Starry Toado (Arothron firmamentum) belongs to the Tetraodontidae family, known for their unique swimming style, puffer ability, and engaging personality. These fish have distinct fin ray structures, with puffers blowing water onto sand to forage, earning the nickname "Blowfish."
Aquarium Suitability
Considered challenging to keep, the Starry Toado demands experienced aquarists willing to provide proper care. They require a large tank of at least 2000 liters and a diet rich in teeth-grinding foods like snails and mussels to prevent dental overgrowth.
Care and Hardiness
While known for their fun personalities, Starry Toados can be aggressive towards similar species. Handling and transporting these fish should be done with caution due to potential toxin release when stressed. Regular monitoring for parasites and providing a varied diet are crucial for their well-being.
Reef Suitability
Starry Toados are not reef-safe due to their diet preference, which includes invertebrates like shrimps, crabs, and snails. They might nibble at the fins of other fish, making them unsuitable for reef environments.
Aquarium Setup
To accommodate a Starry Toado, aquarists should set up a spacious tank with appropriate hiding spots. Maintaining stable water conditions with a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, pH of 8.1-8.4, and specific gravity between 1.020-1.025 is crucial for their well-being.
Behaviour
These fish exhibit mostly peaceful behavior but can display aggression towards similar species. Aquarists may observe their engaging personalities and water spraying behaviors, requiring careful consideration when placing electrical equipment near the tank.
Feeding and Diet
The diet of Starry Toados should consist of larger crustaceans, macroalgae, microalgae, and small crustaceans like krill and brine shrimp. Food that helps grind their teeth is essential to prevent dental issues, as their teeth continuously grow throughout their lives.
Habitat and Distribution
Starry Toados are found in the West Indian Ocean, Australia, Japan, the West Atlantic, New Zealand, and the Central/West Pacific regions. Their habitat includes diverse marine environments where they forage for food by blowing water onto sand, showcasing their natural feeding behavior.
