General Description

The Map Puffer, scientifically known as Arothron mappa, belongs to the Tetraodontidae family. These pufferfish are characterized by their ability to vary in color from black to yellow and are native to the waters of the Indo-Pacific region, spanning from East Africa to the western sea of Japan and down to Australia.

Aquarium Suitability

Map Puffers are generally considered suitable for aquariums, but with caution. They require a minimum tank size of 2500 liters due to their potential size of up to 65.0 cm. These fish have an average hardiness level and are known to have a peaceful temperament, although they may exhibit aggression towards similar species.

Demands, Care, and Hardiness

Map Puffers must be handled carefully, as they have a toxin in their skin that can be released when highly stressed or dying. They are known to feed on large polyp stone corals, small polyp stone corals, and soft corals in the wild, and in captivity, they require a diet rich in larger crustaceans, other invertebrates, and small crustaceans. It is essential to provide them with food that helps prevent their teeth from overgrowing, such as clams. Additionally, these fish must not inhale air, as they have difficulty expelling it. Proper handling, feeding, and tank maintenance are crucial for their well-being.

Reef Suitability

Map Puffers are not considered reef safe and may pose a threat to various invertebrates commonly found in reef environments. Therefore, they are best suited to fish-only aquariums or systems without delicate coral species.

Aquarium Setup

When setting up the aquarium for Map Puffers, it is essential to provide ample space for swimming and hiding spots to help reduce aggression among tank mates. Maintaining water conditions within the recommended parameters of pH 8.1-8.4, KH 8-12, specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C is crucial for their health and well-being.

Behaviour

Map Puffers are known for their fun and interesting personalities. They exhibit a peaceful demeanor most of the time but may display territorial or aggressive behavior towards similar species. Aquarists should observe their interactions with tank mates closely to prevent any conflicts.

Feeding and Diet

In captivity, Map Puffers should be fed a varied diet consisting of larger crustaceans such as shrimp and crabs, other invertebrates, and small crustaceans like krill, mysis, and artemia. Offering foods that help grind down their teeth is essential to prevent overgrowth and maintain their overall health.

Habitat and Distribution

These pufferfish inhabit a wide range of marine environments in the East Indian Ocean, West Indian Ocean, Australia, Japan, Indonesia, East Pacific, and Central/West Pacific regions. They are commonly found in waters with ample coral reefs and rocky substrates where they can seek shelter and forage for food. Given their wide distribution, Map Puffers have adapted to various habitats within their range.
