General Description

Nannostomus Trifasciatus, also known as the Three-Lined Pencilfish, is a species belonging to the Lebiasinidae family under the order Characiformes. Easily identifiable by its distinctive coloration with three dark lateral stripes, this species is a micropredator feeding on tiny invertebrates and zooplankton in its natural habitat.

Aquarium Setup

Nannostomus Trifasciatus thrives in a heavily planted aquarium with a dark substrate. The setup should include floating plants, driftwood branches, and dried leaf litter to mimic its natural habitat. This species benefits from broken lines of sight to exhibit natural behavior and reduce skittishness. Filtration requirements are minimal, with gentle air-powered sponge filters being adequate.

Behaviour

These pencilfish are relatively peaceful and should not be housed with very boisterous or significantly larger tankmates. They prefer being in the middle-to-upper regions of the tank and can be kept with similarly-sized, peaceful characids, smaller catfish species, and certain cichlids. Although they are shoaling fish, they exhibit territorial behavior, especially among males. A spacious aquarium with appropriate decor is essential to prevent aggression and injuries.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, Nannostomus Trifasciatus feeds on tiny invertebrates and zooplankton. In captivity, they accept dried foods but should also receive a daily diet of small live and frozen foods such as Artemia nauplii and grindal worms. Providing a varied diet ensures optimal health and vibrancy in these fish.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

These pencilfish are egg-scattering free spawners that show no parental care. Adequate conditions trigger frequent spawning, and controlled breeding setups can enhance fry survival rates. Adult males display more intense coloration, especially during spawning, while females have a rounder body shape.

Habitat and Distribution

Nannostomus Trifasciatus is commonly found in sluggish tributaries, small rivers, and swampy areas with dense aquatic vegetation. Its natural habitat includes areas with soft, acidic water and a variety of small fish species. Distributed throughout rivers in Guyana and the western Amazon basin, this species is also commercially farmed for the aquarium trade.

While wild populations exhibit varied color patterns based on their origin, commercially farmed specimens are commonly available in the aquarium trade.
