General Description
The Bagrichthys Majusculus, also known as the White-Whisker Lancer, belongs to the Bagridae family in the Siluriformes order. It is characterized by its elongated dorsal spine, with longer pectoral-fin spines compared to other similar species like B. macracanthus and B. vaillantii.
Aquarium Setup
The White-Whisker Lancer prefers a dimly-lit aquarium with plenty of hiding spots such as clay flowerpots, plastic piping, and driftwood. While plants are not necessary, they can provide cover and reduce light exposure at the tank bottom. It is recommended to create distinct territories if housing multiple specimens or similar-sized catfish and avoid strong water flow.
Behaviour
This species is peaceful with tank mates from other areas but can be territorial towards conspecifics, especially males. Maintaining a single male with three or more females reduces aggression and increases long-term success. They prefer being kept with schools of "dither" fishes like larger rasboras or medium-sized barbs for increased activity.
Feeding and Diet
The White-Whisker Lancer feeds on small benthic organisms and detritus in the wild but readily accepts various aquarium foods. A diet of small live or frozen foods like Artemia, bloodworms, and high-quality sinking pellets with vegetable content is ideal for their health.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Reproduction behavior in captivity remains unrecorded, but in the wild, adults move to flooded areas during the wet season to spawn. Male White-Whisker Lancers exhibit longer barbels and a pointed genital papilla, while sexually mature females are slightly larger-bodied.
Habitat and Distribution
These catfish species inhabit large, turbid rivers with muddy substrates and slow flows. They move into flooded riparian zones during the wet season for spawning. The White-Whisker Lancer is found in the Mun River in Thailand, a tributary of the Mekong River, and is also known in the Mekong and Chao Phraya river systems, including some tributaries in Laos and possibly Cambodia.
