General Description

The Indian Shovelnose Catfish, scientifically known as Sperata Aor, boasts a distinctive appearance with its flattened, elongated head. While it resembles unrelated South American catfish species, its unique feature is responsible for its common name. This species is not suited for aquarium life due to its immense size, despite occasionally being seen in tanks in its juvenile stage.

Aquarium Setup

For accommodating the Indian Shovelnose Catfish, an aquarium of at least 45,000 litres is essential (see table for details). Setting up the tank necessitates large pieces of driftwood or massive rocks, strategically placed to provide shelter. Additionally, a soft, sandy substrate and subdued lighting are appreciated by this species.

Behaviour

This catfish displays territorial behavior towards its counterparts and is best kept alone, except in exceptionally large tanks. It is known for its predatory nature, consuming fish that fit into its spacious mouth. Compatible tankmates could include Pangasius species, pacus, and similar large fish.

Feeding and Diet

The Indian Shovelnose Catfish is an easy feeder, accepting various foods such as dried pellets, live prey, and meaty frozen options. Larger individuals can even be fed whole fresh or frozen fish like trout or sprats.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Reproduction of this species is unconfirmed in captivity; however, reports suggest fascinating natural breeding behavior. The male carries eggs for incubation and provides initial nourishment to the fry within uniquely adapted skin on its belly. Sexual dimorphism includes rounder bellies in adult females and a distinctive genital papilla in males.

Habitat and Distribution

Inhabiting both stagnant and flowing waters, including lakes, ponds, reservoirs, and rivers, the Indian Shovelnose Catfish can be found in regions spanning India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Myanmar.
