General Description
The Botia Kubotai, commonly known as the Polka-Dot Loach, is a member of the Botiidae family within the order Cypriniformes. Known for its striking appearance with three black stripes, five black bars, and yellow blotches, this species can reach sizes of up to 15.0cm in length.
Aquarium Setup
For the optimal well-being of Botia Kubotai, a tank setup of at least 270 litres is recommended. Providing a well-structured environment with sand or fine gravel substrate, smooth rocks, driftwood, and ample hiding places is essential. Lighting should be subdued, and plants like Java fern, Java moss, and Anubias can be included. Regular water changes and a tightly-fitting cover are necessary for their thriving.
Behaviour
Botia Kubotai is not notably aggressive but should not be housed with much smaller fish that may be intimidated by its size. They exhibit a complex social hierarchy and should ideally be kept in groups of 5 or more specimens to prevent stress and aggression. These loaches showcase intriguing behaviours such as 'greying out' during dominance battles and 'shadowing,' where younger fish mimic the movements of older individuals.
Feeding and Diet
Primarily carnivorous, Botia Kubotai also consumes vegetative matter and preys on aquatic snails. Their diet should be varied, consisting of quality dried foods, live or frozen bloodworms, and fresh fruits and vegetables like cucumber and spinach. Offering a mix of natural ingredients bound with gelatin is highly recommended to meet their nutritional needs.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Breeding Botia Kubotai in home aquariums is not common, with commercial breeding relying on hormone induction. Mature females typically have a fuller body and rounded snout, while males exhibit elongated snouts with fleshier lips. Hybrids between different Botia species have been reported in recent years.
Habitat and Distribution
Endemic to the headwaters of the Salween River basin near the Myanmar-Thailand border, Botia Kubotai thrives in slow-flowing, well-oxygenated waters with a substrate of sand and rocks, abundant driftwood, and leaf litter. Sympatric fish species in their natural habitat include various cyprinids and loaches adapted to similar conditions.
