General Description

The Golden Zebra Loach, scientifically known as Sinibotia pulchra, is a species that is often found under the vernacular names 'golden Chinese loach' and '12-banded Chinese loach.' It belongs to the Cypriniformes order and is commonly traded in the aquarium hobby.

Aquarium Setup

To set up an aquarium suitable for the Golden Zebra Loach, it is recommended to provide a well-structured environment with a natural-style arrangement. This includes a substrate of sand or fine gravel, smooth rocks and pebbles, driftwood roots, and branches. Lighting can be subdued, and the addition of plants like Microsorum, Taxiphyllum, or Anubias species is beneficial for providing shade. Providing plenty of cover with rocks, wood, and aquarium ornaments is essential, considering the loach's inquisitive nature. Maintaining a tightly-fitting cover is crucial as these loaches may jump occasionally. They prefer well-oxygenated water and don't require extremely turbulent conditions, but clean water with minimal organic waste accumulation is necessary for their well-being.

Behaviour

The Golden Zebra Loach is known to be reclusive, often occupying quieter areas of the aquarium or staying under cover when not actively feeding. Despite its shy nature, this species is peaceful and can coexist safely with a variety of fish species that share similar environmental requirements.

Feeding and Diet

Being primarily micropredators, the Golden Zebra Loach feeds on chironomid larvae, ephemerid larvae, and shrimps in the wild. In captivity, they accept a varied diet consisting of live or frozen bloodworms, Tubifex, chopped shellfish, earthworms, and high-quality sinking dried foods. Their feeding behavior can be quite vigorous once they are acclimated to the aquarium environment.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Reproduction of Sinibotia pulchra has not been documented in captivity, but it is believed to be a seasonal spawner in its natural habitat. Sexual dimorphism is unconfirmed, but it is speculated that females may become heavier-bodied than males once they reach sexual maturity.

Habitat and Distribution

Sinibotia pulchra is native to streams and main river channels with moderate-to-slow flow in southern China, particularly in the Li Kiang region near Nanning city, Guangxi Autonomous Region. They have also been recorded in several tributary drainages connecting to the Zhu Jiang system, including the Liu Jiang and Gui Jiang rivers. These areas, although once habitat-rich, are now facing pollution issues due to industrialization and human activities. Additionally, these loaches are often found in the company of various sympatric species like Tor brevifilis, Cirrhinus molitorella, and Luciocyprinus langsoni.
