General Description
The Yasuhikotakia Splendida, also known as Botia splendida according to Roberts, is a fish species that appeared in the trade around 2009, initially being expensive and maintaining a high price tag. It can be distinguished from related species by its unique physical characteristics, including dark markings forming a ring around the caudal peduncle, bright yellow fins, large dark spots on the caudal fin, and thin vertical bars on the lower body. The Botiidae family, to which this species belongs, has undergone taxonomical changes over the years, leading to the establishment of the genus Yasuhikotakia by Nalbant in 2002.
Aquarium Setup
The ideal tank setup for Yasuhikotakia Splendida involves the use of a well-structured environment with a choice of decor left to personal preference. A natural-style arrangement with sand or fine gravel substrate, smooth rocks, driftwood, and plants like Microsorum or Anubias can be beneficial. Plenty of hiding spots and cover should be provided since these fish are inquisitive and enjoy exploring. Water conditions should be stable, well-oxygenated, and free from organic waste buildup, with regular maintenance and water changes being essential for their well-being.
Behaviour
Yasuhikotakia Splendida exhibit complex social behaviors and are known to form hierarchical structures within their groups. They should be kept in groups of at least 5-6 individuals, preferably more, to prevent aggression and stress. Dominance battles and behavioral rituals are common among these fish, with some individuals displaying bolder or more aggressive traits. Interestingly, they showcase behaviors like 'greying out' during dominance disputes and 'shadowing,' where younger fish mimic the movements of older individuals.
Feeding and Diet
These fish are primarily carnivorous but will also consume plant matter if available. A varied diet comprising quality dried foods, live or frozen options like bloodworm, Artemia, and fresh fruits and vegetables is recommended. Care should be taken to ensure they receive a balanced diet to support their health and vitality. Additionally, caution should be exercised with sharp, motile sub-ocular spines that can cause injury if not handled properly.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
While there are no reports of breeding in private aquaria, commercial farming of other Yasuhikotakia species has been achieved using hormones. Sexually mature females are generally larger and fuller-bodied than males. Spawning in captivity has been observed in a group of 15 adults, resulting in the presence of free-swimming fry, indicating successful breeding under suitable conditions.
Habitat and Distribution
Yasuhikotakia Splendida is officially known to inhabit several localities in the Xe Pian river, a tributary of the Mekong river main channel in southern Laos. These fish prefer small, swiftly-running streams with clear water, rock, and gravel substrates in their natural habitat. Although additional populations may exist, detailed information on them remains scarce.
