General Description
The Axelrodia Stigmatias, also known as the 'white star' or 'pepper' tetra, is a small species of fish within the Characidae family, reaching a maximum size of 2.0cm. Classified under Characiformes, this species is characterized by its silver and yellowish body coloration and distinct markings on the caudal peduncle.
Aquarium Setup
In an aquarium setup for Axelrodia Stigmatias, a minimum tank size of 60 litres is recommended, with a well-structured environment comprising sandy substrate, driftwood roots, branches, and dried leaf litter for cover and microbial growth. Dim lighting, floating vegetation like Ceratopteris spp., and aquatic plants such as Microsorum and Cryptocoryne spp. are beneficial. Specific water conditions of pH 4.0-6.5, hardness of 18-90ppm, and a temperature range of 20-28°C are essential for maintaining this species successfully.
Behaviour
While the Axelrodia Stigmatias is peaceful with other species, it is not an ideal community fish due to its small size and specialized requirements. These tetras are gregarious by nature, forming small territories with rival males sparring regularly. Maintaining a shoal of 8-10 specimens is recommended to observe their interesting behaviors fully.
Feeding and Diet
In nature, this species likely feeds on tiny invertebrates and zooplankton. In an aquarium, Axelrodia Stigmatias accepts small-sized dried foods but should also be offered daily meals of live and frozen fare like Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, and grindal worms to ensure a balanced diet.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Reproduction in Axelrodia Stigmatias can occur in a well-structured, mature aquarium with soft, slightly acidic water. Adding fine-leaved plants for spawning and leaf litter for microorganism colonization is beneficial. Sexually mature females may appear rounder-bodied than males, with differences in color patterns possibly related to gender.
Habitat and Distribution
Native to the western Amazon region, particularly the Rio Madeira in Brazil and Rio Ucayali in Peru, Axelrodia Stigmatias is believed to inhabit blackwater environments in smaller, forested tributaries. Detailed information on its habitat preference is limited.
