General Description

The Savanna Tetra, scientifically known as Hyphessobrycon Stegemanni, is a peaceful fish that thrives in a well-researched community aquarium setting. This tetra species is commonly misidentified as Hemigrammus ataktos due to similarities in appearance.

Aquarium Setup

For an optimal aquarium setup, it is recommended to include a sandy substrate, driftwood roots, and branches, or opt for a heavily-planted arrangement. Adding dried leaf litter can enhance the natural environment, providing cover for the fish and fostering the growth of microbe colonies, which serve as an additional food source for both adult fish and fry.

Behaviour

Known for their peaceful nature, Savanna Tetras are ideal tank mates for similarly-sized characids, gasteropelecids, lebiasinids, smaller callichthyid or loricariid catfish, and non-predatory, small-to-medium-sized cichlids. Keeping a mixed-sex group of at least 8-10 specimens, along with other schooling fish for security, contributes to a more authentic and visually appealing tank environment.

Feeding and Diet

The Savanna Tetra is likely omnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates, crustaceans, filamentous algae, and fallen fruit in its natural habitat. In an aquarium setting, offering a varied diet is essential, including dried foods, live and frozen chironomid larvae (bloodworm), mosquito larvae, Daphnia, and Moina to ensure their optimal health and vitality.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Information on the reproduction of the Savanna Tetra is unreported. Sexually mature females exhibit deeper bodies and are slightly larger than males, showcasing subtle sexual dimorphism in this species.

Habitat and Distribution

Native to the middle rio Tocantins basin in central Brazil, particularly in the states of Maranhão and Tocantins, the Savanna Tetra is also found in the rio Araguaia, a primary affluent. Typically inhabiting the cerrado ecoregion, this species thrives in various savanna environments, including wooded savannas, park savannas, and savanna wetlands, where they face threats from habitat degradation due to dam construction and land clearing.

Note: Refer to the table for specific water condition requirements of the Savanna Tetra.
