General Description

Acrossocheilus Monticola, belonging to the Cyprinidae family under the order Cypriniformes, is a species restricted to southern China, northern Vietnam, and northern Laos. Members of this genus can be identified by their rostral fold, fleshy continuous lips around the mouth corners, two pairs of barbels, and distinct dark vertical bars on each flank. A. Monticola is unique with seven or eight bars, each 1-3 scales wide.

Aquarium Setup

The ideal aquarium setup for Acrossocheilus Monticola should replicate its natural habitat. A tank of at least 30 gallons is recommended, densely planted with hiding spots and areas mimicking rocky surfaces. Maintaining water quality is crucial, with temperatures between 68-75°F (20-24°C) and slightly acidic to neutral pH levels (6.8-7.5). Partial water changes should be conducted regularly (see table).

Behaviour

These fish are known to be active swimmers, constantly exploring their environment. They are social and peaceful, often seen in groups. A. Monticola prefers a well-aerated tank with moderate water flow, resembling their natural mountain-stream habitat.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, Acrossocheilus Monticola feeds on small benthic invertebrates and grazes on biofilm from solid surfaces. In captivity, they can be fed high-quality flake or pellet food supplemented with frozen or live foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Information about the specific reproductive behavior and dimorphism of Acrossocheilus Monticola is limited. However, like many cyprinids, they are likely to be egg scatterers, with females potentially being slightly larger or differently colored than males during breeding seasons.

Habitat and Distribution

Endemic to the upper Yangtze River basin in China, Acrossocheilus Monticola is primarily found in mountain streams flowing into the Ichang gorge of the Yangtze River. The species' name "monticola" reflects its natural montane habitat, showcasing its preference for such environments.
