Behaviour

C. chagunio is unlikely to prey on tankmates, although small species are best omitted due to its adult size. It is recommended to keep it with fish that inhabit similar environments like cyprinids and loaches. This species tends to swim in loose aggregations in nature and may exhibit shy or skittish behavior if kept alone or in small numbers. They are likely to be shoaling rather than schooling fish, developing a distinct pecking order. It is advisable to purchase a group of six or more for a more natural-looking display and to observe interesting interactions among the fish.

Feeding and Diet

The diet of C. chagunio mainly consists of insect larvae and aquatic gastropods. While plant material is consumed in small quantities, members of this genus are considered foraging micropredators. To maintain their best condition, regular meals of small live and frozen foods like bloodworms, Daphnia, and Artemia, along with high-quality dried flakes and granules, are recommended.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

As of current knowledge, C. chagunio has not been successfully bred in captivity. Distinguishing between sexes in young fish is challenging based on external characteristics. However, as males mature, they develop noticeable tubercules on the head and extensions to the last two anal fin rays.

Habitat and Distribution

Chagunius species are endemic to the Ganges and Brahmaputra river basins, found in northern India, Nepal, and Bangladesh. They inhabit highland rivers and tributaries with clear water, rocky, gravelly, or sandy substrates, and some aquatic vegetation. These fish prefer slightly calmer waters than adults, often found schooling with Tor species in faster-flowing zones.

Aquarium Setup

The tank setup for C. chagunio requires a well-maintained environment with a large footprint. It is advisable to mimic a flowing river with variably-sized rocks, gravel, water-worn boulders, and driftwood. Clean water with high dissolved oxygen levels and water movement is crucial. Heavy, tightly-fitting tank covers are recommended, and the use of large external filters for efficient oxygenation and water flow is necessary.

General Description

Chagunius chagunio, although rarely kept in home aquaria due to its large size, is native to the Ganges and Brahmaputra river basins. It is part of the Cyprinidae family, with a maximum size of 45.0 cm, and a minimum recommended tank size of 420 liters. The species, often found in shipments from India, Myanmar, and Thailand, can be distinguished by the number of scales and other minor morphological differences from closely related species in the genus.
