General Description

The Crossocheilus Burmanicus, a species within the Cyprinidae family, is known for having 8 branched dorsal fin rays, immobile rostral lobes, and lacking a dorsal spine. It can be distinguished from similar species by the absence of a dark lateral stripe extending into the caudal fin. The upper and lower lips of this species are not connected, with the upper lip attached to the lower jaw via a thin membrane.

Aquarium Setup

To house the Crossocheilus Burmanicus, a minimum tank size of 300 litres is recommended. The ideal setup includes substrates of boulders, pebbles, gravel, and sand to mimic its natural habitat. Additionally, the presence of submerged driftwood or tree roots is beneficial. Adequate lighting to promote biofilm growth for the fish to browse on is essential.

Behaviour

In its natural habitat, the Crossocheilus Burmanicus inhabits flowing streams and tributaries, displaying a foraging behavior on algae, diatoms, phytoplankton, and microorganisms. In an aquarium setting, these fish may venture into midwater to feed and often graze on biofilm that forms on rockwork.

Feeding and Diet

The diet of Crossocheilus Burmanicus should consist of high-quality dried foods with added Spirulina or similar ingredients. Fresh vegetable matter such as shelled peas, blanched courgette, spinach, and chopped fruits are also recommended. A diet rich in protein should be avoided as the fish have difficulty metabolizing certain components which can lead to health issues.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Information regarding the reproduction and dimorphism of Crossocheilus Burmanicus is currently unavailable. Due to the lack of a diagnosis for this species, specific details on breeding behaviors and physical differences between males and females remain unknown.

Habitat and Distribution

The Crossocheilus Burmanicus is native to rivers in Myanmar, northeastern India, and western Thailand, particularly those draining into the Irrawaddy and Salween river systems. These fish are typically found in clear, shallow waters with substrates allowing biofilm growth, such as boulders, pebbles, and driftwood.
