General Description

Garra mullya, commonly known as Mullaya Garra, can be identified by the absence of a proboscis, fewer than 34 lateral line scales, uniform scales covering the body, and an interorbital distance less than or about two times the head length. The genus Garra is a complex group with species often being misidentified or considered synonyms. Taxonomic revisions are ongoing due to the extensive distribution of these fish spanning from southern China across Southeast Asia, India, the Middle East, to North/Central Africa. This genus includes species with unique adaptations such as a modified lower lip forming a mental adhesive disc and keratinized upper and lower jaw margins for scraping food.

Aquarium Setup

The Mullaya Garra requires an aquarium with ample swimming space and areas to cling onto surfaces due to its modified lower lip. A substrate that mimics their natural habitat is preferred, along with vegetation and rocks to provide hiding spots. Water quality must be maintained with good filtration, and regular water changes are necessary. The temperature should be kept between 20-26°C (68-79°F), with a pH range of 6.5-7.5 and hardness of 5-12 dGH (see table).

Behaviour

Garra mullya is known to cling to surfaces in fast-flowing water, aided by their mental adhesive disc. They are primarily bottom-dwellers and may display territorial behavior, especially during breeding periods. Some populations of Mullaya Garra migrate upstream for breeding purposes.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, Mullaya Garra feed on algae, diatoms, and organic detritus. In an aquarium setting, they should be offered a varied diet including algae wafers, sinking pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp. Regular feeding is essential for their health and well-being.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Details about the specific reproductive behavior and dimorphism of Garra mullya are not provided in the available information. However, it is mentioned that some populations of this species migrate upstream for breeding.

Habitat and Distribution

The Mullaya Garra is endemic to peninsular India and has been found in states such as Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and others. They inhabit various river systems including the Tapti, Narmada, Mahanadi, and Cauvery. Garra mullya has been recorded in diverse habitat types ranging from polluted low altitude main river channels to flowing headwater streams and upland systems.
