General Description

Labiobarbus fasciatus is a species of fish with distinct characteristics such as 48-54 scales in the lateral series, absence of a spot on the shoulder or center of the caudal peduncle, and a body adorned with longitudinal stripes created by spots on scales, particularly prominent along the lateral line. The caudal fin of this fish is noticeable for its red coloration with a thin dusky or dark marginal stripe on each lobe.

Aquarium Setup

When setting up an aquarium for Labiobarbus fasciatus, it is essential to provide a spacious tank, facilities for swimming, and areas for the fish to hide and explore. Adequate filtration, a temperature range of 22-26°C, and a pH level of 6.5-7.5 are recommended. This fish thrives in a well-planted aquarium with a fair amount of water flow and subdued lighting (see table).

Behaviour

Labiobarbus fasciatus is known for its active and social behavior within a group. These fish tend to swim actively in the middle and bottom regions of the aquarium but also enjoy exploring nooks and crannies. They display a peaceful temperament towards other tankmates and prefer to be in the company of their own species.

Feeding and Diet

In their natural habitat, Labiobarbus fasciatus primarily feeds on algae, insects, and small crustaceans. When kept in aquariums, they should be offered a varied diet that includes high-quality flakes, pellets, live or frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp. Supplementing their diet with vegetable matter is also beneficial.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Information on the specific reproductive behavior of Labiobarbus fasciatus is limited. In general, cyprinid species typically scatter their eggs, and the adults show minimal parental care. Dimorphism in this species is not well-documented, although there may be subtle differences in coloration and body size between males and females.

Habitat and Distribution

Labiobarbus fasciatus is native to the Pahang River system in southern Peninsular Malaysia and the Greater Sunda Islands of Sumatra and Borneo. This species is found in the Kapuas, Barito, and Mahakam watersheds in Kalimantan, the Indonesian portion of Borneo. The type locality for L. fasciatus is 'Pangabuang, Lampong Province, Sumatra, Indonesia.'
