General Description

The Pethia Stoliczkana, commonly known as the Pethia, is often confused with P. ticto, with distinguishing features in their lateral lines. With an attractive coloration, the Pethia is an omnivorous species that thrives in well-oxygenated, flowing streams and tributaries, often seen in areas with clear water, sandy substrates, and abundant biofilm. This species is classified under the Cyprinidae family and can grow up to 5.0cm in length.

Aquarium Setup

For an optimal aquarium setup, a minimum tank size of 90 litres with water temperatures between 18-26°C, a pH range of 6.0-7.5, and a hardness level of 18-268ppm is recommended (see table). Creating a heavily-planted environment with floating plants, driftwood, and a dark substrate will enhance the Pethia's coloration. Adequate water movement and filtration are beneficial, mimicking the natural hill stream-type habitat preferred by this species.

Behaviour

Pethia Stoliczkana is known for its peaceful demeanor, making it an excellent addition to community aquariums. When kept in mixed-sex groups of at least 8-10 individuals alongside other schooling fish, such as open water-dwelling cyprinids or benthic species like loaches, the Pethia thrives. Intraspecies behavior, particularly among rival males competing for females or hierarchy, is a captivating display of vibrant colors and interaction.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, Pethia species are omnivores, feeding on diatoms, algae, detritus, insects, and zooplankton. In captivity, these fish readily accept a diet of small live and frozen foods like bloodworms, Daphnia, and Artemia, supplemented with high-quality dried flakes and granules containing plant-based ingredients. Regular feeding enhances their condition and vibrant colors.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Pethia Stoliczkana is an egg-scattering species that exhibits no parental care. To maximize breeding success, a separate breeding tank with dim lighting and a substrate that prevents adult fish from reaching the eggs is recommended. The slight acidic to neutral pH water with proper oxygenation stimulates spawning behavior. Adult males are distinguishable by their slimmer bodies and more vibrant colors compared to females.

Habitat and Distribution

This species is distributed across Manipur state in northeastern India, Myanmar, Thailand, and western Laos, favoring shady, fast-flowing streams rich in oxygen. In their natural habitat, Pethia resides alongside various other fish species, showcasing adaptability and coexistence. Indigenous to tributaries and headwaters, Pethia displays a preference for well-oxygenated waters with substrates of sand, gravel, rocks, and leaf litter, often adorned with submerged driftwood and aquatic vegetation.
