General Description:

Tanichthys Sp. 'Vietnam' is a diminutive fish species that was first described in 2009 and is sometimes referred to as T. sp. 'lemon' or 'yellow white cloud'. It is known for its peaceful nature, making it an excellent addition to a well-maintained community aquarium. This fish thrives in setups with compatible tankmates and does best in groups of 10 or more individuals to enhance their natural schooling behavior. Tanichthys Sp. 'Vietnam' is relatively easy to care for and does not require specific water chemistry parameters.

Aquarium Setup:

For Tanichthys Sp. 'Vietnam', a tank size of at least 40 liters is recommended. The species shows better coloration in a heavily planted aquarium with a dark substrate. The addition of floating plants, driftwood, roots, branches, and leaf litter is appreciated and contributes to a more natural environment. Although filtration doesn't need to be overly strong, some water movement is beneficial, particularly in a hill stream-type setup. For specific water conditions, the recommended parameters include a hardness of 36-179ppm, pH range of 6.0-7.5, and a temperature between 18-25°C (see table).

Behaviour:

This species of fish is known for its peaceful demeanor, making it an ideal resident in a community tank. It is best kept with smaller and similarly tranquil tankmates, as larger or more boisterous fish may cause stress. Tanichthys Sp. 'Vietnam' is a schooling fish by nature, and maintaining a group of 10 or more individuals not only reduces stress but also enhances the visual appeal of the aquarium. During breeding and competition for female attention, males display their best colors.

Feeding and Diet:

In the wild, Tanichthys Sp. 'Vietnam' likely feeds on small insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton. In an aquarium setting, they readily accept a varied diet including small live and frozen foods like bloodworms, Daphnia, and Artemia, along with quality dried flakes and granules. Including food with plant or algal content is beneficial for their overall health and vibrant colors.

Reproduction & Dimorphism:

Tanichthys Sp. 'Vietnam' is an egg-scattering, continuous spawner without parental care. Breeding can occur in a densely planted, mature aquarium with the presence of mesh, plastic grass matting, or spawning mops for egg protection. Males exhibit cornified tubercles on the snout, while females are rounder-bellied. During breeding, males intensify in color and may develop extended dorsal and anal fins.

Habitat and Distribution:

This species is native to the small province of Da Nang in central Vietnam. Its habitat typically consists of clear, flowing water over a rocky substrate, with marginal grasses and vegetation present. Tanichthys Sp. 'Vietnam' is suited for stream-style tanks and can coexist with smaller species like Danio, Devario, and Garra in appropriate conditions.
