General Description

The Pearl Gourami, scientifically known as Trichopodus Leerii, is a stunning and hardy species highly recommended for beginner aquarists. It belongs to the Osphronemidae family, specifically the Luciocephalinae subfamily. With a maximum size of 12.0cm, these fish are long-lived, surviving for up to 8 years in the aquarium. They are indigenous to Thailand, Malaysia, Borneo, and Sumatra, with introduced populations found in Singapore and Colombia. Wild specimens are rare in the hobby, as most available in the market are mass-produced in the Far East and Eastern Europe.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal well-being, the Pearl Gourami requires a minimum tank size of 81 liters. Ideal tank conditions include a planted setup with floating vegetation where they can build bubblenests. The water in the aquarium should have a hardness of 2-30 dH, a pH range of 5.5-8.0, and a temperature between 24-30°C. (see table)

Behaviour

This species is renowned for its peaceful nature, making it an excellent addition to community tanks. However, males can be territorial towards each other, particularly during breeding times. It is recommended to provide ample hiding spaces to minimize aggression. When housed with very vigorous or aggressive fish, the Pearl Gourami may become withdrawn.

Feeding and Diet

Pearl Gouramis have an unfussy diet and readily accept a variety of foods. They are known to consume aquarium pests like hydra. Offering a balanced diet of live, frozen, and flake foods will help ensure their nutritional needs are met.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding Pearl Gouramis is relatively easy as they are bubblenesters. The male constructs a bubblenest among floating plants where spawning occurs. Male gouramis exhibit vibrant colors and fin extensions during breeding, unlike the plainer, plumper females. After spawning, the male cares for the eggs until they hatch.

Habitat and Distribution

In their natural habitat, Pearl Gouramis inhabit lowland swamps, typically in coastal regions. They prefer waters with ample vegetation for shelter and breeding. Their distribution ranges from Southeast Asia to introduced populations in other regions.
