General Description: The Snakeskin Gourami, scientifically known as Trichopodus Pectoralis, is a species of labyrinth fish belonging to the Osphronemidae family. It is a larger community tank fish that is cultured for food in its native regions, with a unique ability to produce 'cracking' noises, especially during breeding or territorial interactions.

Aquarium Setup: Ideal tank conditions for the Snakeskin Gourami include a planted aquarium with floating vegetation, hiding spots, and open swimming areas. Water parameters should range from 5.8 to 8.5pH, 2-30°dH hardness, and a temperature between 22-30°C. A minimum tank size of 108 litres is recommended (see table).

Behaviour: Known for its peaceful nature, this gourami can coexist with other non-aggressive fish that are not intimidated by its potential size. Males are less territorial compared to other gourami species but may prey on smaller fish. Suitable tankmates comprise barbs, loaches, corydoras, loricariids, larger danios, rasboras, and angelfish.

Feeding and Diet: As an omnivorous species, the Snakeskin Gourami primarily feeds on plant matter, algae, phytoplankton, and various terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates, including insect larvae, slugs, and spiders.

Reproduction & Dimorphism: Reproduction for this species is relatively easy as it is a bubblenester. Males exhibit pointed dorsal and anal fins, with orange or red ventral fins, while females are plumper. During breeding, males construct bubblenests up to 10" in diameter, showcasing intricate courtship displays and typical anabantoid spawning behavior.

Habitat and Distribution: The Snakeskin Gourami is an adaptable species thriving in various biotopes, preferring slow-moving or still waters with dense vegetation. It is native to the Mekong and Chao Phraya drainages in countries such as Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar, where it is not only a popular food source but also farmed for commercial purposes. Feral populations can be found in regions like Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Colombia.
