Aquarium Setup
The Giant Mekong Catfish, despite its impressive size, is not suitable for home aquariums due to its massive adult size, specific habitat requirements, and critically endangered status. With a minimum tank size of 25,000 liters, replicating its natural environment of main river channels and large tributaries is practically impossible for most hobbyists. The fish's pelagic nature further complicates any attempts at replicating its required tank setup. For enthusiasts interested in similar species, Pangasius hypophthalmus and Pangasius sanitwongsei are more commonly available in the aquarium trade, although they also grow to substantial sizes and are challenging to maintain in captivity.
Behaviour
The Giant Mekong Catfish does not exhibit significant behavior traits that are of note.
Feeding and Diet
As a primarily herbivorous species, the Giant Mekong Catfish feeds on vegetation. However, it supplements its diet by preying on smaller fish and crustaceans.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
In the wild, the Giant Mekong Catfish undertakes migratory journeys upstream to spawn during late spring and summer. While breeding in an aquarium setting has not been documented, successful breeding programs on fish farms have been established in some native countries. Mature females can be distinguished from males by their rounder bellies.
Habitat and Distribution
Native to the lower Mekong River, the Giant Mekong Catfish inhabits main river channels and larger tributaries in regions spanning China, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Due to the critical endangerment of the species, conservation efforts are underway, including captive breeding and reintroduction programs to help restore wild populations.
