General Description

The Brachyplatystoma Filamentosum, commonly known as "Piraíba," is a large species of catfish found in the Amazon region. It is characterized by its dark dorsal coloration that gradually transitions into a paler shade ventrally. Adults can be distinguished from similar species by their deeply-forked caudal fins, with the upper lobe typically longer than the lower lobe.

Aquarium Setup

When setting up an aquarium for Brachyplatystoma Filamentosum, a sandy substrate with driftwood or a bare arrangement is recommended. Water conditions should be maintained with a pH range of 6.0-8.0, a temperature between 22-28°C, and hardness from 18-357ppm. An oversized, efficient filtration system is crucial, along with regular tank maintenance to ensure a suitable environment for this species.

Behaviour

These catfish should only be kept with species large enough to avoid predation due to their predatory nature. Known to travel long distances through deep, flowing channels, they are part of large migratory movements in search of nutrient-rich waters. These movements are primarily for feeding and dispersal purposes rather than spawning.

Feeding and Diet

Brachyplatystoma Filamentosum is almost entirely piscivorous in the wild, preying on bottom-dwelling fishes. In captivity, they readily adapt to dead alternatives such as prawns, mussels, squid, and other fish. Adults typically require one substantial meal per week to maintain their health.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Reproduction of Brachyplatystoma Filamentosum remains unrecorded in captivity due to its complex natural life cycle, which involves migrations for spawning. Sexual dimorphism in this species is unknown, with limited information available on specific characteristics that differentiate males from females.

Habitat and Distribution

Widely distributed across the Amazon and Orinoco river drainages, as well as in the Guianas and northeastern Brazil, the Brachyplatystoma Filamentosum prefers deeper, flowing channels for habitat. Spawning occurs in distant headwaters, with fry travelling downstream to estuary regions for feeding and growth. Migrations covering vast distances of up to 5500 km have been observed in some populations of this species.
