General Description

The Marbled Pim, scientifically known as Leiarius Longibarbis, is a large catfish that can reach up to 80.0cm in length. They are primarily piscivorous but can adapt well to dead foods in captivity, with a lifespan of over 20 years.

Aquarium Setup

For an adult Marbled Pim, a tank size of at least 3240 litres is required. Tank decor is not essential for adults, but pieces of bogwood, beech branches, or smooth rocks can be added. Large and heavy decor is recommended to prevent movement and ensure ample swimming space. The substrate should consist of large, smooth pebbles to avoid ingestion issues. A powerful biological filtration system, preferably a sump-type setup, is necessary to manage the waste produced by these large fish.

Behaviour

Although known to consume smaller fish, the Marbled Pim is generally peaceful and can coexist with similar-sized species in appropriate conditions. They are territorial towards conspecifics and other large Pimelodids, typically requiring solitary housing.

Feeding and Diet

Feeding primarily on meaty items like prawns, mussels, and earthworms, the Marbled Pim can also be offered whole fish fillets. It is crucial to maintain a varied diet to prevent food habituation and overfeeding. Avoid feeding mammal meat or feeder fish to prevent health complications.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Reproduction details of the Marbled Pim in captivity are unreported. Sexual dimorphism is challenging to observe externally, but adult females may have a stockier build compared to males.

Habitat and Distribution

Inhabiting large rivers and lakes, the Marbled Pim is found in regions such as the Rio Orinoco, Rio Essequibo, and the Amazon basin across countries like Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Brazil, Peru, and Bolivia. They prefer lurking among submerged tree roots during the day and are nocturnal feeders.
