General Description
The Red Lizard Catfish, also known as L010A/L10A, is a peaceful species belonging to the Loricariidae family. It exhibits a unique red coloration and can grow up to 11.0cm in size. The origins of this species are unclear, with debates existing on whether it is a naturally occurring or man-made variety.
Aquarium Setup
The Red Lizard Catfish thrives in tank setups mimicking its natural biotope. This includes a substrate of sand layered with dried leaves like oak or beech, twisted branches, rounded stones, and caves or PVC piping for shelter and potential spawning sites. While it can also adapt to well-planted aquariums, it prefers subdued lighting. A minimum tank size of 70 litres, with water conditions maintained at a pH of 6.0-7.5, hardness of 2-15°dH, and a temperature range of 24-29°C. (See table for details)
Behaviour
Renowned for its peaceful demeanor, the Red Lizard Catfish can coexist with various species such as small characins, Apistogramma, Corydoras, and other quiet loricariids. It thrives in small groups and is non-territorial except during spawning. Care should be taken not to house it with overly aggressive tankmates, as it may become reclusive and struggle to compete for food.
Feeding and Diet
An omnivorous eater, the Red Lizard Catfish accepts sinking dried foods, vegetable matter like blanched spinach, courgette, and kale, as well as live or frozen options such as bloodworms and daphnia. Providing a varied diet rich in nutrients ensures their well-being.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Under suitable conditions, the Red Lizard Catfish breeds readily. Males establish and guard spawning caves, where females deposit eggs to be fertilized. After hatching, the male safeguards the fry, which require feeding on soft vegetable matter, live foods, and constant access to nutrients. To aid spawning, simulating natural conditions with cool water changes may prove beneficial.
Habitat and Distribution
The precise habitat and distribution of the Red Lizard Catfish remain uncertain, as it is uncertain whether the species is wild-caught or a selectively bred variety. The fish's origin story is complex, with theories suggesting hybridization with closely related species like Rineloricaria lanceolata to enhance commercial viability.
