General Description
Echinodorus floribundus, also known as E. grandiflorus ssp. aureus, is a large Echinodorus species with roundish, deep-cut, heart-shaped leaf blades that can reach lengths of up to 30 cm. This aquatic plant features bristled leaf stalks, pellucid leaf areas in a mesh pattern, and large flowers with 25-30 stamina. It has thick, hard, creeping rhizomes that allow for propagation.
Aquarium Suitability
Echinodorus floribundus is only of limited use in aquariums, as young plants can be cultivated submersed for a period, but older plants tend to grow long-stalked emersed leaves that reach far above the waterline. This species may develop into a beautifully flowered solitary plant in large open tanks, requiring ample space to thrive. It is recommended for semi-emersed use in open tanks as a background plant.
Demands and Hardiness
E. floribundus has medium growth and a height ranging from 30-100 cm. It is unsuitable for outdoor use in colder climates but can be cultivated outdoors during the warm season as a bog plant. This species thrives in nutrient-rich substrates and requires medium to high light levels, a pH range of 5-7, and a temperature range of 20-28°C.
Aquascaping & Usage
Due to its size and growth habits, E. floribundus can be used for aquascaping as a background plant in large tanks with ample space. It can add a unique and visually striking element to an aquascape when given the room to develop fully. In open tanks, this species may flourish and produce beautiful flowers if provided with appropriate conditions.
Propagation
Propagation of Echinodorus floribundus can be done through proliferating inflorescences, rhizome division, cutting off daughter plants, and seeds. The thick, hard rhizomes of this plant can be separated to create new individuals, enabling hobbyists to propagate and expand their E. floribundus population.
Habitat and Distribution
Native to southern Mexico, Cuba, and various regions in South America, E. floribundus can be found in ponds, marshes, floodplains, and wet meadows. Its wide distribution extends from southern Mexico to Panama, Cuba, and South America, ranging from Colombia and Venezuela to northern Argentina and Uruguay.
