General Description
Rotala rotundifolia, commonly known as Dwarf Rotala, is a classical aquatic plant widely distributed across South to South-East-East Asia. It thrives in various watery environments such as swamps, riversides, and even rice fields up to 2700 meters above sea level. Due to contamination in rice seeds, it has also spread to the Southern US. This plant was initially introduced incorrectly as Rotala indica in the aquarium hobby, causing confusion with the true Rotala indica species. The plant's appearance can vary significantly depending on the environmental conditions, making it challenging to distinguish between its different forms.
Aquarium Suitability
With its fast growth and easy propagation via cuttings, Rotala rotundifolia is highly suitable for aquariums. It is classified as a very easy plant to care for, thriving well under medium lighting but showcasing its full potential and reddish coloration under strong light conditions. The plant flourishes best in water temperatures ranging from 22-28°C and at a nitrate level of around 5 mg/l. It serves as an ideal background or midground plant, adding a beautiful accent to both nature and Dutch-style aquarium setups.
Demands and Hardiness
Rotala rotundifolia is categorized as a very easy plant, making it suitable for beginner aquarists. It grows well under medium to high lighting, and its growth rate is fast, especially when provided with sufficient nutrients. The plant prefers a low nitrate level (around 5 mg/l) and thrives in high phosphate and iron/micronutrient levels. It can tolerate a wide range of pH values from 4.5 to 8 and temperatures between 4-32°C.
Aquascaping & Usage
This aquatic plant is best utilized in the middle or background of the aquarium, where its striking colors and bushy growth pattern can be appreciated. It can form a fine-leaved, grass-like lawn when maintained properly. Furthermore, Rotala rotundifolia can be cultivated outside during warm months and may even survive mild winters in temperate zone ponds.
Propagation
