General Description
The Flashlight Fish, also known as the Twofin Flashlight Fish or Lantern Fish, boasts a striking black body with a blue hue on its dorsal and caudal fins. It stands out with what appears to be a luminous smile, courtesy of bioluminescent bacteria residing in the light organs beneath each eye. These bacteria emit a glow, typically white but occasionally blue or yellow depending on the fish's mood, and the fish can rotate the light organ to switch the light on and off. The light serves various purposes, from communication through blink frequency variations to defense mechanisms by startling predators or luring plankton for feeding.
Aquarium Suitability
Experts advise that the Flashlight Fish is best kept in specialized aquariums tailored for nocturnal species, ideally alongside similarly sized Pinecone fish, Squirrelfish, Big Eyes, and Cardinalfish. A habitat with low lighting and ample hiding spots is recommended. These fish function well in small groups, acclimating faster and feeding more readily when housed together. They are generally non-aggressive towards tank mates, so passive companions are preferred, and caution is advised against exposing them to copper sulfate.
Care and Hardiness
Being nocturnal, Flashlight Fish are sensitive creatures that thrive in environments with subdued lighting and minimal disturbances. Their peaceful temperament makes them suitable for tranquil aquarium settings with suitable tank mates that won't agitate them. Their striking appearance and unique bioluminescent features make them a captivating addition to expertly curated marine tanks.
Reef Suitability
Flashlight Fish are considered reef-compatible with caution. Care should be taken when introducing them into reef setups due to their specific habitat preferences and particular lighting requirements.
Aquarium Setup
To create a suitable environment for Flashlight Fish, a tank of at least 472 liters is recommended. Maintaining stable water conditions with a pH range of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a carbonate hardness of 8-12 dKH is crucial for their well-being. Providing ample hiding spots and minimal lighting during the day is essential for their comfort and security.
Behaviour
Flashlight Fish exhibit peaceful behavior within their groups and towards other tank inhabitants. Their unique ability to control their bioluminescent light organs adds an intriguing dynamic to their interactions with each other and their environment.
Feeding and Diet
As carnivorous creatures, Flashlight Fish primarily feed on plankton attracted to their bioluminescent light. Providing a diet rich in small crustaceans and zooplankton can help mimic their natural feeding behaviors in captivity.
Habitat and Distribution
The Flashlight Fish, scientifically known as Anomalops katoptron, inhabits tropical waters and is typically found in regions where they can form symbiotic relationships with bioluminescent bacteria. Their distribution spans areas conducive to their unique feeding habits and nocturnal lifestyle.
