General Description
The Moluccan cardinalfish, also known as Yellow-eye cardinalfish, is a species belonging to the Apogonidae family. Typically coming in various shapes and colors, cardinalfish are well-suited for aquarium environments. These fish have a large mouth and a hearty appetite, primarily feeding on Artemia, Mysis, and krill. They display a peaceful temperament towards other fish but may exhibit aggression amongst themselves if space or food is insufficient. Cardinalfish are nocturnal creatures, often seeking hiding spots during the day within structures like SPS corals, anemones, or between the spines of Sea urchins.
Aquarium Suitability
Considered suitable for most aquariums, the Moluccan cardinalfish can coexist with other fish species as long as sufficient space is provided. They can be kept in groups if tank size permits, and multiple specimens of the species can coexist in the same tank, especially when introduced simultaneously. However, it's essential to note that Moluccan cardinalfish can pose a threat to small crustaceans, such as small shrimp, in the aquarium environment.
Care and Hardiness
With an average hardiness level, the Moluccan cardinalfish requires adequate hiding spots, such as live rocks or between anemones, to feel secure in its environment. They have specific water condition preferences, with ideal parameters including a pH of 8.1-8.4, a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, and a salinity of 1.020-1.025. Additionally, maintaining a carbonate hardness (KH) level of 8-12 is recommended for optimal care.
Reef Suitability
Known for being reef compatible and always reef-safe, the Moluccan cardinalfish can thrive in reef aquarium setups without posing a threat to coral or other invertebrates. They typically do not exhibit any destructive behavior towards the reef environment.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for Moluccan cardinalfish, it is essential to provide hiding places using structures like live rocks and anemones. The tank should have a minimum size of 100 liters to accommodate the species comfortably. Ensuring a well-maintained environment with proper lighting and water quality is crucial for the health and well-being of the fish.
Behaviour
Moluccan cardinalfish are known for their peaceful temperament towards other fish species, making them suitable for community tanks. However, they may display territorial behavior amongst themselves if space is limited. Understanding their nocturnal nature is important, as they will actively seek out hiding spots during the day.
Feeding and Diet
The recommended diet for Moluccan cardinalfish includes small crustaceans like krill, mysis, and Artemia. They also benefit from consuming zooplankton such as Cyclops and pods. Being opportunistic feeders, they will readily accept a variety of food in the aquarium, ensuring they receive proper nutrition for their overall health.
Habitat and Distribution
Natively found in the Indo-Pacific region, the Moluccan cardinalfish inhabits waters from South Africa and India eastward to Fiji, with their range extending north to Taiwan and south to Australia. Their natural habitat includes coral reefs where they seek shelter among anemones, rocks, and other structures for protection and as resting spots.
