General Description

The Yellow-green goby, scientifically known as Priolepis aureoviridis, is a member of the Gobiidae family. These fish are relatively small, typically reaching a maximum size of 6.0cm, and are native to the waters of Australia, Central/West Pacific. They are characterized by their yellow-green coloration, hence their common names of Yellow-green goby or Golden green goby. This species is part of the Priolepis genus and can be found in specific regions such as Ant Atoll, Pohnpei in Micronesia, as well as the Hawaiian Islands and Johnston Atoll in the Central Pacific.

Aquarium Suitability

The Yellow-green goby is deemed suitable for aquariums, with caution. It is considered to have average hardiness and a docile temperament. Due to their secretive nature, they may not frequently be spotted out in the open. These fish thrive in environments that mimic their natural habitat, preferring setups with overhangs and caves for shelter. A minimum tank size of 50 liters is recommended to accommodate their needs adequately.

Demands, Care, and Hardiness

Being docile in nature, the Yellow-green goby requires careful consideration when housed with more aggressive tank mates. They are relatively hardy but necessitate frequent feeding, especially when newly introduced into the aquarium. A diet comprising small crustaceans like krill, mysis, and artemia, as well as zooplankton such as Cyclops and pods, is recommended to meet their nutritional requirements.

Reef Suitability

This species is known to be reef-compatible, making them a safe addition to reef aquariums without posing a threat to the coral or other invertebrates present. They are unlikely to cause any disturbances within a reef environment, showcasing their suitability for such setups.

Aquarium Setup

For setting up an aquarium suitable for Yellow-green gobies, it is essential to provide ample hiding spots in the form of overhangs and caves. Maintaining stable water conditions with a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, a pH level between 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12 is crucial for their well-being.

Behaviour

Known for their shy and secretive behavior, Yellow-green gobies tend to hide within the sheltered areas of the aquarium, making them less visible to the observer. Their timid demeanor calls for a tranquil tank environment to ensure they feel secure and comfortable.

In terms of feeding habits, Yellow-green gobies are carnivorous and feed on small crustaceans like krill and mysis, as well as zooplankton. It is essential to provide a varied diet rich in proteins to support their nutritional needs and maintain their overall health.

Habitat and Distribution
