General Description
The Doubletooth Soldierfish (Myripristis hexagona) belongs to the Holocentridae family and is commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, ranging from East Africa to Samoa. These fish are known for their red/grey coloration and secretive nature, with a maximum size of around 30.0cm.
Aquarium Suitability
Considered suitable for aquariums, the Doubletooth Soldierfish is a hardy species that requires a minimum tank size of 600 liters. They can be aggressive if not provided with enough space and should be introduced simultaneously if kept with other specimens of the same species.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
These fish are mostly peaceful but can display aggression towards similar species. They are nocturnal, preferring dimmed light or darkness, and thrive in aquariums with overhangs and caves. Doubletooth Soldierfish are known to be secretive, hiding among rocks, but will become more visible as they acclimate to their new environment.
Reef Suitability
Reef safe with caution, this species may pose a threat to small crustaceans like shrimp due to their predatory nature.
Aquarium Setup
To accommodate a Doubletooth Soldierfish, it is advised to provide dim lighting initially and gradually increase it to normal levels. They are most active in low light conditions and require spaces like overhangs and caves to feel secure in the aquarium.
Behaviour
These fish are not generally aggressive towards other tank inhabitants but may prey on very small fish and invertebrates. While they can be kept in small groups, territorial disputes might occur, particularly if space is limited.
Feeding and Diet
The recommended diet for the Doubletooth Soldierfish includes fish, larger crustaceans, other invertebrates, small crustaceans, and zooplankton. It is ideal to feed them during the night or dim light conditions, possibly starting with live food to entice them to eat.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, Doubletooth Soldierfish are found in various locations including the East Indian Ocean, West Indian Ocean, Australia, the Red Sea, Indonesia, and the Central/West Pacific. Their distribution ranges from the Ryukyu Islands in the north to the Great Barrier Reef and New Caledonia in the south.
