General Description
The Pinecone soldierfish (Myripristis murdjan) belongs to the Holocentridae family and is known by various common names including Crimson soldierfish, Crimson squirrelfish, Big-eye soldierfish, Red soldierfish, and Pinecone soldierfish. These fish are typically red/grey in color and display a secretive behavior, being most active during dark hours.
Aquarium Suitability
Considered suitable for aquariums, Pinecone soldierfish require careful handling due to their potential threat to smaller fish and small crustaceans. It is advised not to catch them with nets as their large eyes are easily damaged.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
With a hardy nature, these fish may exhibit aggression if not provided with sufficient space. They can coexist with their own species when introduced simultaneously. Pinecone soldierfish prefer dim lighting initially, mimicking their natural habitat. They are nocturnal and thrive in environments with overhangs and caves.
Reef Suitability
Reef safe with caution, Pinecone soldierfish may act peacefully but can display aggression towards similar species in the tank.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for Pinecone soldierfish, ensure dimmed lighting initially, gradually increasing to normal levels. Provide ample space and incorporate overhangs and caves for their secretive nature. Maintaining water conditions with a pH of 8.1-8.4, temperature between 22.2-25.6°C, and a salinity level of 1.020-1.025 is crucial.
Behaviour
Pinecone soldierfish are mostly peaceful, but caution should be exercised towards similar species within the tank. They tend to hide among rocks, becoming more visible as they acclimate to the aquarium environment.
Feeding and Diet
These fish have a varied diet that includes fish, larger crustaceans, other invertebrates, and small crustaceans like krill, mysis, and artemia. Live food may be necessary initially to entice them to feed.
Habitat and Distribution
Found in the Indo-Pacific region from the Red Sea to Oceania, Pinecone soldierfish inhabit waters of the East Indian Ocean, West Indian Ocean, Australia, Indonesia, and parts of the Pacific Ocean.
