General Description
The Longjaw squirrelfish, scientifically classified as Neoniphon marianus, belongs to the Holocentridae family. These fish, also known as Hoseye conga, can be found in the Western Atlantic from the Florida Keys, USA, and Bahamas to Trinidad, spanning the Antilles and throughout the Caribbean. They are characterized by their red/grey coloring and secretive nature, being most active in low light conditions.
Aquarium Suitability and Demands
The Longjaw squirrelfish are deemed suitable for aquariums with care. They may exhibit aggression if not provided with adequate space and are known to coexist peacefully with their own species when introduced simultaneously. These fish can be shy initially but can acclimatize to the aquarium environment over time.
Care and Hardiness
This species is considered hardy and nocturnal, being most active when the aquarium light is dimmed or turned off. To recreate their natural habitat, it is recommended to provide overhangs and caves in the aquarium. Longjaw squirrelfish are cautious feeders and may need live food initially to entice them to eat, particularly when newly introduced to the aquarium.
Reef Suitability
Longjaw squirrelfish are regarded as reef safe with caution, as they have the potential to be a threat to small crustaceans within a reef environment. Care should be taken when housing them with delicate invertebrates or small fish.
Aquarium Setup
To best cater to the needs of Longjaw squirrelfish, a tank size of at least 600 liters is advised. The species prefers dim lighting conditions initially, gradually increasing to normal light levels. Maintaining water parameters with a pH of 8.1-8.4, KH of 8-12, specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and temperature between 22.2-25.6°C is crucial for their well-being.
Behaviour
Longjaw squirrelfish are known to be potentially aggressive and territorial, especially if space is limited within the aquarium. Therefore, providing ample space and suitable hiding spots can help mitigate aggression among tank mates.
Feeding and Diet
In captivity, Longjaw squirrelfish can be fed a diet comprising fish, larger crustaceans like shrimp and crabs, other invertebrates, and small crustaceans such as krill, mysis, and artemia. Ensuring a varied diet rich in nutritional value is essential for their health.
Habitat and Distribution
Typically found in the Western Atlantic region, from the Florida Keys to Trinidad and throughout the Caribbean, Longjaw squirrelfish inhabit reefs and rocky areas where they seek shelter in caves and overhangs. Their natural habitat influences their behavior and preferences in an aquarium setup.
