General Description

Corydoras Melini, also known as False Bandit Cory, is a congenial species belonging to the Callichthyidae family within the order Siluriformes. Typically reaching a maximum size of 5.0cm, this species showcases an oblique dark bar along the dorsal surface of its body, similar to several other Corydoras species.

Aquarium Setup

For a suitable aquarium setup (see table), False Bandit Cory thrives in a tank with a minimum capacity of 72 liters. It is advisable to include fine sand or rounded gravel as the substrate, along with driftwood branches, dried leaf litter, and ample hiding spots. Maintaining water conditions within the parameters of pH 4.0-7.0, hardness of 18-90ppm, and a temperature range of 20-26°C is essential.

Behaviour

False Bandit Cory exhibits peaceful and gregarious behavior, preferring to be in groups of at least 4-6 individuals. Being facultative air breathers, they may occasionally be seen rising to the surface to gulp air. Caution is advised when handling them as their stiff pectoral-fin spines can cause painful stings due to potentially toxic secretions.

Feeding and Diet

As foraging omnivores, Corydoras Melini readily accepts sinking dried foods, live, and frozen varieties such as bloodworms and Tubifex. Maintaining a diverse diet is crucial for their optimal health, as they should not solely rely on leftovers in the aquarium.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding False Bandit Cory is akin to other Corydoras species, with a recommended ratio of two males per female. Females are larger and become visibly rounder when gravid. Spawning involves depositing eggs on surfaces like aquarium glass or fine-leaved vegetation, with an incubation period of 3-4 days before the fry can feed on small live foods.

Habitat and Distribution

In their native habitat, Corydoras Melini inhabits blackwater tributaries and flooded forest areas with acidic, soft water. They are primarily found in tributaries of rios Negro and Orinoco in northwestern Brazil and east-central Colombia, adapting to environments with minimal hardness, low conductivity, and a pH of 4.0-6.0.
