General Description

Hyphessobrycon melanostichos, also known as the Black Stripe Tetra, is a species classified under the order Characiformes. It shares similarities with the Hyphessobrycon sp. Blue Ribbon but can be distinguished by its lighter, streamlined body, smaller humeral spot, and red coloration absent in the Blue Ribbon tetra. This tetra is a small fish, with a maximum size of 2.5cm.

Aquarium Setup

To set up an aquarium for H. melanostichos, it is recommended to maintain a minimum tank size of 54 liters. Larger groups (10 or more) are ideal to prevent territorial behavior. A 90cm long tank with a group of 12+ individuals is optimal for harmonious cohabitation. Decorate the tank with lush plant growth, rounded cobbles, sandy substrate, driftwood, leaf litter, and mosses to mimic their natural habitat.

Behaviour

H. melanostichos can exhibit territorial behavior in smaller tanks or those with boundaries. In larger groups, they form loose hierarchies, with males constantly competing for female attention and hierarchy within the group. Males display better coloration in the presence of rivals. Despite territoriality, they show minimal aggression towards other species in larger tanks.

Feeding and Diet

This tetra species is likely omnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates, crustaceans, algae, fallen fruit, and more in their natural habitat. In captivity, they can survive on dried foods but thrive on a varied diet including live and frozen foods like bloodworms, mosquito larvae, Daphnia, and Moina for optimal health.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

H. melanostichos are egg-scattering free spawners showing no parental care. Controlled breeding conditions can maximize fry yield. Females are slightly deeper-bodied than males. During courtship, males darken with reddish-brown tail hints. Females are less likely to exhibit chasing behaviors seen in males during courtship.

Habitat and Distribution

Endemic to the Rio Doze de Outubro in the upper Rio Tapajos basin of Brazil, H. melanostichos can also be found in the Rio Teles Pires under the name Hyphessobrycon cf. melanostichos. They prefer habitats similar to robust fishes in nature, often found in open water with comparable species like characids, gasteropelecids, and small cichlids. Maintaining water conditions of pH 5.5-7.5, hardness of 0-179 ppm, and a temperature range of 23-28°C is essential for their well-being.
